My Anthem

Annie Waits - Ben Folds

And so
Annie waits, annie waits, annie waits
For a call
From a friend
The same
Its the same
Was it always the same?
Annie waits for the last time

The clock never stops, never stops, never waits
Shes growing old
Its getting late
And so he forgot, he forgot
Maybe not
Maybe hes been seriously hurt
Would that be worse?

Headlights crest the hill
Shadows pass her by and out of sight
Annie sees her dreams:
Friday bingo, pigeons in the park

Annie waits for the last time
Just the same as the last time

Annie says you see this is why Id rather be alone.
And so
Annie waits, annie waits, annie waits
For a call
From a friend
The same
Its the same
Was it always the same?
Annie waits as the last...

Headlights crest the hill
Who will be the one for evermore?
(ooh ooh)
Annie, I could be
If were both still lonely when were old

Annie waits for the last time
Just the same as the last time
Annie waits for the last time
Just the same as the last time

Annie waits
But not for me

Crappy New Years

Not happy Jan... as the ad goes.

So should I get really pissed tonight to forget about prickface?

I have been feeling miserable for the past couple of days and its noticable (at least by the people at work). I can't help it, usually I am really good at hiding my emotions. I hate him for making me feel this way.

I also want to become a hermit and totally shut myself off from the world, more specifically the people of this world.

I watched the beginning of Saddams hanging earlier today and I actually felt really sad for him, perhaps it was the look on his face, he looked kind of peaceful to me.

Day 6

We arrived in Luxor early in the morning and was transferred to our hotel, Tutotel to freshen up, sleep etc. We were to meet with the rest of our group and our proper tour leader later today (they did the Egypt Encompassed tour and had spent some time in the desert).

We took a stroll around Luxor to waste some time before having lunch in the hotel. During lunch our new travelling mates arrived from the desert. Understandably they all wanted to freshen up and rest as well, but before they did they came up and introduced themselves and to meet the Newbies. We also met Tam, our tour leader.

yes he really looks like that ....hehehehe only joking :)

Later that day we visited Karnak Temple by Caleche, a horse and buggy. Karnak was impressive and adel our tour guide for Karnak (and Valley of the Kings the day after) was great.

We then took a Caleche through the backstreets and Bazaar of Luxor, where I continually had little kids shouting hello and asking for money.

Afterwards we had all had dinner at a resaurant around the corner. The name I forget.

Day 5

Day 2 of the tour aka Pyramid and Sphinx day...

Met our tour guide (not to be confused with tour leader) Rasha (?) who was very nice and friendly. On the way to the Pyramids and Sphinx she told us the history and some conjecture on how the pyramids were made, she also warned us of the camel people.

What can I say of the Pyramids..they're huge and positively magnificent. We went into the 2nd Pyramid (Khafre's Pyramid), if you suffer from claustrophobia then this is not for you. Pretty much all it is you go through a tunnel to end up in a chamber where a stone coffin lies. But at least I can say I've been inside a Pyramid. :)

You aren't allowed to climb the Pyramids but some of the tourist police were encouraging it, and I'm not going to say no to a person with a gun in their hands.

And yes there is dogs and rubbish here too.

I was kind of snap happy, so lots of photos.

Next was a short drive to the Sphinx. You cant get near the Sphinx its not interactive but thats OK. You walk through a temple which still has some of the alabaster floor intact, and walk parallel to the Sphinx then back out through the temple.

After some site seeing, we were again taken to a Papyrus seller and I did buy some more....hmmm and then to get a sandwitch (hey its how they spelt it :P)

We returned back to the hotel to veg out and pack for our overnight train to Luxor.
But before leaving on the train we met up with Hassan again who took us around the streets of Cairo looking for a Cafe. And yes Hassan did sing the Egyptian national Anthem on the street but we also paid in kind. Couldn't find a Cafe so we went back to the hotel for drinks on level 9.

At the train station we were stared at constantly, probably because we were making a ruckus (I dare say). Bunch of wierdo Aussies and token Egyptain :)

Finally the train arrived and we said our farewells to Hassan and settled in. Now I have a problem sleeping on transports of any kind (I think I'm over it now) so it took along time for me to get to sleep. Especially when its cold and the lights are on. I was to be woken by a Japanese women who dropped her bag on my chair. Ah well what can you do.

Since this is an overnight train I'll leave you here...

Day 4

Today was technically day 1 of the Nile and Sinai Odyssey Tour and we were to meet who we thought would be our tour leader later that night, but today was a free day.

I woke up early (again) and waited to Ange to wake (for some reason she would wake when I had a shower at this stage). We wondered down to breakfast and was introduced to what was our first boiled egg, but not our last :) Carrie was sitting at the other table but we didn't know her then.

After breakfast we organised a day trip through the King Hotel to see Saqqara, Memphis and the Egyptian Museum.

So Ange and I head of to Saqqara in a taxi. The Taxi driver was rather talkative and first took us to a Papyrus place where they showed us how to make the paper and then sold us quite a few of their pieces for probably a lot more than they are worth, but by this stage we hadn't really got used to haggling. They did give us a chip and salad sandwich, which angela fed to the dogs at Saqqara, I ate it.

After an hour or so of people selling us papyrus we finally started to head off to what was our first really really old monument...Saqqara or the Step Pyramid (please correct me if I am wrong). As we were rather fresh at all this we were snap happy and I think I have more pictures of Saqarra than anything else. We were shocked that a) there were dogs b) rubbish c) a complete lack of bins (ok I did find one) at the monument site. But I think the awe of just being in a place with thousands of years history overcloaded those things listed. And we did have a very friendly puppy following us around.

Once we had exhausted all photo opportunities there we got back into the taxi and the driver tells us that Memphis is boring and takes us straight to the Museum, of which he gives us ONE, I repeat, ONE hour to look around. Needless to say I would go back to Egypt just to see the rest of the place but I would give the mummy room a skip second time round.

So after our ONE hour we go back to the hotel, and I think this is were we actually introduced ourselves to Carrie (sorry guys if this is wrong...memories already fading although I have a feeling it was earlier than this..could have been in the morning) and a phone call from Chrissy who I had prior contact through emails.

I can't remember what we did up until the time we met Hassan must have been boring...all I know is that we were waiting on the wrong level for him. After that was all sorted and names, flights etc exchanged, Hassan showed us an easier ATM to access (only 2 roads to cross!!) and an internet cafe which was 2LE an hour when it was open.

I believe Carrie, Chrissy, Angela and I had dinner at Chicken Tikka that night (next door to KFC that is run by deaf and speech impaired people) as Hassan had a birthday party to go to. Had an earlyish night cause we were off to see the Pyramids the next day.

Day 3

Today started really early for me. I woke up at 3am thanks to my internal clock that wakes me up after 8 hours sleep. Waking up that early was in a way pure torture, I'm kind of impatient, mingled with excitement because we were finally going to arrive in Egypt later that day.

We said goodbye to Athens at 1:35pm, flying Egypt Air and arrived at Cairo Airport at 3:30pm.

It was raining in Cairo the day we arrived so it probably wasn't great weather to be introduced to Cairo traffic. I could honestly say I was shocked at the total choas that confronted me on the roads (I'm glad I wasn't driving).

A quick word on the traffic in Cairo, nay, Egypt in general....the most valuable commodity to have in a car when driving there is good breaks and a horn. The driver also must have the ability to squeeze their car into any space that is made available even if it creates 5 lanes of traffic as opposed to 3. (yes there are traffic lines on the roads, but you pretty much ignore them).

After about an hour of nail biting fear we arrived at the King Hotel (yes I did steal a menu, anyone for Sizer Salad??). At this point in time we didn't have any of the local currancy so the person who carried our bags up got Euros, so the first thing we had to do was to get some money. Reception told us to go to the Sheriton Hotel, which required us to cross about 5 lanes of traffic, it truly gets the adrenilin pumping (also just so you know...dont wear thongs (flip-flops for you non Aussies) in Cairo after it has been raining).

After that we had dinner in the hotel, checked out Nomads on level 9, then went to bed.

The picture is the view from our hotel room at the King Hotel.

Day 1 and 2

12 Feb 2006

Ange and I start our travelling at 6:30pm on Austrian Air. After 8 hours of flying, where we managed how to work the little TV, we arrive in Kuala Lumpur at some ungodly hour. We were unloaded off the plane only to be re-uploaded an hour later..security checks apparently. So after an hour we are flying again (10 hours) to land in Austria for a 4 hour stopover. Nothing much of interest in the airport except that you can smoke in the cafes, they aslo provide a smoking room in which I failed to see the point.

I should also point out that it is now actually the 13th. We find our next plane and head off to Athens for an overnight stay before touring Egypt.

The hotel in Athens had a view of the Parthenon and parts of the Acropolis as you can see in the pic taken from the balcony. Anyway we didn't do much. We got a Hamburger from Goodies (a Greek fast food chain I assume) and went to bed at 7pm.

Less Than Two Weeks to Go

Yep that is right only 13 days to go before I jetset across the world.

I am really excited :)

Anyway Starterbutton gave a pleasant surprise the other week, she has decided (behind my back) to also come along .... Bwahahahaha my manipulating worked bwahahahaha.

I think I've got most of everything i need including 28 pairs of undies. They were a dollar each at best and less and they are now effectively disposable undies...... hehe.... I'm leaving a trail of dirty undies behind.... hehehe.

Ange and I will be gone for ONE WHOLE MONTH, you know whats really cool about that its like one less month of the year I have to be at work....but i'm kind of worried about work because they day after I leave for Egypt the best worker I have is leaving for the Navy....Ok the other workers work very hard but they just don't understand the place like I do and I can't impart all my knowledge in the next 10 days to them (yes I know the place like the back of my hand, and well I should after 6 or so years). But I do worry....
